ABSM Designated Credentials

Credentials - Sleep Medicine Certification Examination

Individuals who completed the required training and experience and successfully passed the sleep medicine certification examinations administered by the American Board of Sleep Medicine are referred to as Diplomates of the American Board of Sleep Medicine.

When noting this designation on letterhead or after a signature, Diplomates of the American Board of Sleep Medicine may use the following options: Diplomate, American Board of Sleep Medicine; Diplomate, ABSM or D, ABSM. Diplomates of the ABSM should not only list the acronym “ABSM” as a credential. Using only "ABSM" is often confusing or misleading; as it infers that the individual is the ABSM or represents the ABSM.

Certified International Sleep Specialists may not use the designation of Diplomate of the ABSM or ABSM Certified Sleep Specialist when referring to their qualifications.

Examples:
Correct: John Doe, MD, D,ABSM
Incorrect: John Doe, MD, ABSM

Credentials – Behavioral Sleep Medicine Certification Examination

Individuals who completed the required training and experience and successfully passed the behavioral sleep medicine certification examination administered by the American Board of Sleep Medicine are referred to as certified in Behavioral Sleep Medicine.

When noting this designation on letterhead or after a signature, individuals certified in Behavioral Sleep Medicine may use the following options: Certified in Behavioral Sleep Medicine; Certified, BSM or CBSM. Individuals certified in Behavioral Sleep Medicine should not only list the credential “BSM” as a credential. Using only “BSM” is often confusing or misleading.

Certified International Behavioral Sleep Medicine Specialists may not use the designation of Certified in Behavioral Sleep Medicine when referring to their qualifications.

Incorrect: John Doe, PhD, BSM

Credentials - Sleep Technology Registry Examination

Individuals who completed the required training and experience and successfully passed the sleep technology registry examination administered by the American Board of Sleep Medicine are referred to as a Registered Sleep Technologist.

When noting this designation on letterhead or after a signature, individuals who are Registered Sleep Technologists may use the following options: RST.

Certified International Registered Sleep Technologists may not use the designation of RST when referring to their qualifications
