Award
The American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM) created the Helmut S. Schmidt Award to recognize individuals for outstanding service to the field of sleep medicine through the advancement of board certification. The ABSM administered the award program from 1991 – 2006.
About Dr. Helmut Schmidt
Helmut S. Schmidt, MD, was a pioneer in the field of sleep medicine. In 1975, he opened one of the first sleep disorders centers in the country at The Ohio State University Medical Center. In 1977 and 1978, he helped organize the first board certification examination in clinical polysomnography. It was administered by the Association of Sleep Disorders Centers (ASDC), which is now the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). For more than a decade, Dr. Schmidt continued to play a leading role in guiding the national examination process to certify physicians in the field of sleep medicine. He received the Distinguished Leadership Award from AASM in 1988 and founded the Ohio Sleep Medicine Institute in 1989. Dr. Schmidt became the first president of the American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM), which was incorporated in 1991. He was both the inaugural recipient and the final recipient of the ABSM award named after him.
