Sleep Medicine Credential Verification
The American Board of Sleep Medicine offered a subspecialty certification examination for sleep medicine through 2006. While the ABSM no longer offers a sleep medicine exam, we continue to maintain and verify records for the ABSM Diplomates who hold this lifetime credential.
Sleep medicine expertise also is available from a sleep disorders center that has been accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).
A hard copy of a duplicate certificate can be obtained from the American Board of Sleep Medicine for $25. For complimentary PDF copies of a certificate please email kcuzzone@aasm.org. Learn more about the appropriate use of the ABSM Diplomate Credential.
Certification Disclaimer
Certification by the American Board of Sleep Medicine does not in itself confer authority to practice medicine beyond the authority granted by a state that issues a license to practice medicine.
The American Board of Sleep Medicine throughout its history offered non-physicians, specifically PhDs, the opportunity to sit for its examination. Many PhD candidates over the years successfully passed the examination and received the designation “Diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine.” This designation must not be interpreted to mean that the American Board of Sleep Medicine designation supersedes any state or federal law regarding medical license requirements for the treatment of patients. Those who have successfully passed the exam MUST be careful not to practice medicine outside of their legal limits.
Current Certification Exam
Since 2007 the sleep medicine certification examination in sleep medicine has been administered by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and is offered every other year by six member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). Credential verification is available on the Certification Matters website.
For information regarding upcoming sleep medicine certification examinations, please refer to the ABMS member board through which you received your primary specialty certification:
